Crankshaft

The crankshaft converts the up-and-down motion of the pistons into the rotational force that turns the wheels.

How’s it work?

The crankshaft is the backbone of the engine’s motion. It’s a heavy-duty metal shaft that sits inside the engine block and spins as the pistons move up and down. Each piston is connected to the crankshaft via a connecting rod, and together they form a repeating, rotating motion that ultimately powers the drivetrain. This motion is what turns the vehicle’s wheels, either directly or through a transmission.

Because it deals with intense pressure and friction, the crankshaft is precision-balanced and supported by strong bearings. If it fails, it can stop the engine cold. While the crankshaft itself rarely breaks, it can wear down over time or suffer damage if the oil isn’t clean and well-distributed. Keeping up with oil changes is key to protecting it. Fun fact: performance engines often use forged crankshafts for better durability at high RPMs.
